Structure Lightning Protection and Earthing Systems

LPSD Software is nVent ERICO’s proprietary computer-aided design package that is used to design custom protection for structures based on statistical parameters. It optimizes the location of air terminals on a site-by-site basis to provide the most effective lightning protection coverage. The LPSD Lightning Protection Software Designer enables ERICO engineers to provide the best possible design to various lightning protection standards around the world.

Lightning risk assessment calculation reports

Lightning Risk assessment Study is actually the measure of risk of a lightning strike and probability of damages. It assesses the lightning risks to the facility according to international standards requirements. Hence calculations are according to IEC Standard 62305-2.

Soil Resistivity Study

A comprehensive soil resistivity survey is key to creating an effective earthing system; as opposed to inadequate or erroneous soil resistivity readings, which are likely to result in a flawed design. Soil resistivity testing is the process of measuring a volume of soil to determine the conductivity of the soil. Earth resistance measurement is essential to accurately determine that the installed earthing system meets the criteria from initial design. GLT technicians ensure all measurements are correctly taken and interpreted so that the true resistance of the earthing system can be accurately determined.

Testing & Commisioning

The purpose of this procedure is to define the step by step method to implement the correct practices for the pre-commissioning, testing & commissioning of lightning Protection system through the guide-line contained herein so as to ensure that the job execution complies with the project requirements and serves the intended function to satisfactory level.

Step & Touch Pontential testing

This testing defines step potential as the voltage between the feet of a person standing near an energized grounded object. Touch potential is the voltage between an energized object and the feet of a person in contact with the object.


It is recommended that all Lightning Protection Systems be visually inspected at least once per year. In some areas where severe climatic change occurs, it might be advisable to instead visually inspect systems semi-annually, or following extreme changes in ambient temperatures.
